A death in the family comes with its fair share of stressors, and the funeral process is one of them. If your loved one wishes to be cremated, it's still possible for the family to pay their respects with a traditional funeral. Consider these three options that incorporate cremation.

Options for Cremation Services

1. Direct Cremation

The most basic and least expensive option is direct cremation. A minimum of 24 hours must pass before cremation can take place due to state laws. The ashes of your loved one are placed in a temporary urn made of plastic and cardboard, a permanent urn purchased from the state, or one you wish to use. Direct cremation doesn't include a funeral or memorial service. Instead, the ashes are returned to the family.

2. Memorial Service With the Urn

deathA memorial service is a funeral service without the body of the deceased present. The cremation takes place usually two days after their death. There is no time constraint for a memorial service to take place, so it can be weeks or months after cremation.

After the memorial service, the family may either place the ashes in a permanent urn, bury them in the cemetery, place them in a columbarium, or scatter the ashes somewhere meaningful. Keep in mind that there are places you aren't allowed to scatter ashes, so check state laws before you do so.

3. Traditional Funeral Service, Then Cremation

A traditional funeral is usually held two to three days after a person's death. Instead of the service ending with burying the casket, it ends with the cremation of the body; that’s why a rental casket is often used during the service. The family then receives the ashes of their loved one 24 hours after cremation.
