Saving money on your energy bill doesn’t mean you need expensive renovations. A simple switch to energy-efficient light bulbs or having an electrician inspect faulty wiring can equal significant savings. Below, learn some practical tips to help save you money this winter.

How to Save Money on Your Energy Bill

1. Unplug Appliances When Not in Use

Appliances and electronics like phone chargers, coffee machines, toasters, kettles, hairdryers, and printers still use a small amount of power when they’re not in use. Unplug all appliances after you’ve used them or plug them into a power strip that can be turned off.

2. Install Motion Sensors for Outdoor Lighting

One of the easiest steps you can take to save electricity is turning off the lights when you leave the room. Installing sensors in your home can be helpful for people who forget to turn off the lights. For outdoor lighting, an electrician can install a motion sensor that works on a timer. With this system, you don’t have to leave the porch light on all night if you’re expecting someone to come home late.

3. Update Old Wiring

electricianFaulty wiring in your home isn’t only dangerous; it can also cost you hundreds more per year on your electricity bill.

Fires could also occur due to damaged wiring because it can cause the components to heat up beyond what the wires can take. An electrician will check if any damage has occurred, and they’ll repair and connect the wiring properly.

If your home has old aluminum wiring, this should also be updated and brought up to code.

4. Install LED Light Bulbs

LED light bulbs don’t produce as much heat as traditional bulbs and use a fraction of the electricity to do so. LED bulbs last a long time—about 25,000-35,000 hours. These lightbulbs come in a variety of colors, including the classic blue lighting and warm yellow-tones. If you are going to install LED lighting, you will need to update your dimmers to make sure they are compatible with your new LED bulbs.

5. Switch to a Programmable Thermostat

Keeping your home’s thermostat at the same temperature all day is a huge drain on energy costs. There’s no need to keep the house at a toasty 72 degrees if no one is home during the day. Set the thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a few higher in the summer. Have the system switch to your desired setting about 30 minutes before you come home.
