With proper care and maintenance, dentures can last for five to eight years. While they’ll need to be replaced eventually because of natural wear and tear, you can extend their life by keeping the following tips in mind.

Do:

Brush them daily.

Before bed every night, brush your dentures gently to scrape away any food particles that accumulated over the course of the day. Make sure to use both a brush and paste that are specially formulated for artificial teeth. Traditional toothbrushes and pastes can be too abrasive for the finish on dentures.

Soak them when not in use.

Dentures are comprised of several materials, some of which can morph if they dry out. As such, keep your teeth moist when not in use. When you take them out at night, for example, place them in a special soaking solution before going to bed. If you’re unsure which solution to use, the dentist can recommend a few of the best brands.

Don’t:

Skip dental exams.

denturesIf you have a full set of dentures, it may be tempting to skip cleanings and exams. The dentist will still want to monitor your overall oral health, though, so don't skip any appointments. Along with examining your gums, tongue, and jaw at every appointment, your provider will make sure the dentures are still fitting comfortably.

Drop them.

Always handle dentures over the sink or counter, and lay down a towel first so they have somewhere soft to land if they fall. Dentures can be delicate; they could break if they slip onto a hard surface and land in the wrong way.
