Any florist will tell you that poinsettias are the most popular holiday plant, other than Christmas trees. About 34 million of them are sold each year, making them the highest-selling potted plant all year in the U.S. Unfortunately, many people don’t know how to care for their poinsettias, so they don’t live until Christmas. Below are a few ways to prolong the life of your poinsettia.

3 Tips Florists Give About Keeping Poinsettias

1. Water Them Correctly

The primary way that people kill poinsettias is by overwatering. Poinsettias need very little water compared to other plants. If you’re watering it in the pot, give it a small sip of water daily, but make sure it’s tiny. The most efficient way to water your plant is to take it out of its decorative pot and soak it in water before putting it back. This makes sure that the roots aren’t sitting in water and rotting. If you plan to water your poinsettia this way, you’ll only need to do so once a week. If you have questions, a florist can help.

2. Place Your Poinsettia in a Bright Spot

floristPoinsettias are tropical plants, so they’ll take as much sunlight as possible. A windowsill is fine, but the window should stay closed. Aso, make sure it’s not too drafty. The spot you choose shouldn’t be near a heater, fireplace, or doorway to the outside. They can die when exposed to dry air.

3. Maintain the Right Temperature

Poinsettias like it warmer during the day and colder at night. This is the best way to mimic the tropical temperatures they’re used to. During the day, keep your home between 65-70 degrees. At night, aim for around 60 degrees. This can be challenging to maintain if you prefer your house warmer or colder, so do your best.
