UTIs, or urinary tract infections, are a common condition frequently treated by gynecologists. This infection, which can impact any area of your urinary tract from your kidneys to your bladder and urethra, can be uncomfortable and inconvenient. Below is some helpful information about the causes and symptoms of UTIs.

Understanding Urinary Tract Infections

What Causes This Condition?

UTIs are caused by bacteria, primarily E. coli, entering the urinary tract. Infection in the bladder is referred to as cystitis, and infection of the urethra is known as urethritis. Both UTIs are common in women due to the proximity of the urethral opening to the anus. Other causes of UTIs include sexual activity, sexually transmitted diseases, a suppressed immune system, a urinary blockage, changes in estrogen levels during menopause, and certain types of birth control such as diaphragms.

What Are Common Symptoms of UTIs?

GynecologistWhen you’ve contracted a UTI, you’ll experience an ongoing urge to urinate. You may experience a burning sensation when you go to the bathroom, cloudy urine, blood in your urine, and only small amounts of urine each time you go. Some individuals experience pelvic pain and a strong scent to their urine, as well. Should your UTI reach your kidneys, symptoms may intensify and include nausea, fever, chills, and lower back pain.

How Can You Prevent UTIs?

In order to prevent UTIs, gynecologists recommend staying hydrated. By drinking plenty of water, you’ll dilute your urine and use the restroom with added frequency, thus flushing your urinary tract and reducing the odds of infection setting in. Wiping from front to back is also incredibly important to reduce the risk of bacteria from the anus making its way into the urinary tract. Emptying your bladder after intercourse and avoiding scented feminine products that can irritate the area, such as scented tampons and douches, can also reduce the odds of contracting a UTI.
