When you need to replace one or more teeth, two popular methods can restore your smile and mouth’s function: dental bridges and implants. To decide which option is best for your needs, learn more about what to expect from each restoration technique.

Dental Bridges

A bridge consists of two crowns on either end with the artificial tooth in the center. It requires strong natural teeth on either side of the gap to support the artificial tooth. The teeth on either side are filed and shaped so the crowns will fit over them, then the bridge is cemented to them.

The Benefits

Installation is a relatively quick and easy process that can be completed in two visits to your dentist. A bridge typically lasts about 10 years.

Dental Implants

A dental implant replaces the entire tooth, root and all. The three-step process involves a small surgical procedure, in which an anchor, usually a titanium screw, is inserted into the jawbone.

The bone needs time to heal around the anchor before the crown is placed. For most people, the process takes between five and nine months to complete.

The Benefits

The required surgery makes this a more invasive and time-consuming option. However, the investment provides many benefits.

There is no impact on your other teeth since they don’t need to be shaped. The screw helps preserve your jawbone structure like the rest of your teeth do, so it will prevent bone loss. The crown will look, feel, and perform like a natural tooth. An implant typically lasts 10 to 15 years.
