During pregnancy, it’s natural to worry about how your actions might impact your baby’s health. For instance, if your dentist recommends an X-ray, you may fear the potential effects of radiation. To help you keep your baby safe while maintaining your oral health, here’s what you should know about dental X-rays and pregnancy.

What Are Dental X-Rays?

A dental X-ray is a form of electromagnetic radiation that produces images of the interior of your teeth and gums. These images help your dentist identify problems such as tooth decay and impacted teeth. Some people worry that the radiation from a dental X-ray will harm a developing baby.

Are Dental X-Rays Safe During Pregnancy?

dentistVery high levels of X-ray radiation can potentially harm a fetus or embryo, especially in the early stages of pregnancy; however, dental X-rays are generally considered safe during pregnancy for the following reasons:

  • Low Radiation Levels: Dental X-rays use an extremely low level of radiation. A routine dental X-ray exposes you to about the same amount of radiation you’d experience during a short airplane flight.

  • Concentrated Dose: The low level of radiation is concentrated and pointed at your mouth, meaning your baby will not be directly exposed to the X-ray beam.

  • Protective Covering: Your dentist or hygienist will further protect you and your baby by covering you with a leaded apron that minimizes radiation exposure to your abdomen.

Even though dental X-rays are safe, you should still tell your dentist you’re pregnant, so they can ensure your dental treatment plan won’t pose any risks to you or your baby. That said, some women postpone routine dental X-rays until after the first trimester for some added peace of mind, although it’s not medically necessary.
