When it comes to lighting your home, having the right mix of lamps and ceiling fixtures can make all the difference in creating the perfect ambiance. However, there is more to consider than just the fixture’s appearance. Homeowners must also be aware of the type of lightbulb socket used by their new lighting installation. Here are some of the most common types of bulbs and sockets.

Top 3 Lightbulb Socket Types

1. E12 Base

A bulb with an E12 base means it screws into the socket in what is known as an “Edison screw-in.” The 12 signifies that its base width is 12 mm. As the smallest standard bulb base, these lightbulbs are sometimes referred to as having a candelabra base. These bulbs tend to be tube-shaped, globe-shaped, or candle-flame shaped. They are most often used for chandeliers, decorative string lights, pendant lights, and wall sconces.

2. E17 Base

As a result, the lightbulbs tend to be larger than E12 bulbs, though they are still primarily used for chandeliers and other decorative applications — including Christmas lights. They are often used for ceiling fans. Bulbs with an E17 base are also used for appliances such as refrigerators and microwaves.

3. E26 Base

An E26 base bulb has a 26 mm base width, and is the size that is most often used for standard light fixtures. A-shape and globe-shape bulbs, as well as spotlight and floodlight bulbs use this base size. These bulbs are easily interchangeable with E27 bulbs, which are more commonly used in European light fixtures.
