Part of the fun and tradition of the holiday season is decorating. While you may be familiar with Poinsettias and evergreens for festive decorating, many more plants also make beautiful displays and centerpieces. Below are a few of the most popular.

4 Gorgeous Plants to Use for Holiday Decor

1. Cyclamen

This perennial flowering plant has attractive foliage and lovely upswept flowers. The colors range from white to red, and all pinkish shades in between. This plant is easily found in garden centers and larger grocery stores at holiday time because it blooms during winter months. If it receives the right care, it will bloom for around two months—perfect as a Thanksgiving through New Year holiday houseplant. Water it when soil is dry, but don’t let the roots sit in water. Trim off yellowing leaves and dying flowers close to the base of the plant to encourage more blooms.

2. Christmas Cactus

plantsThis easy to grow succulent offers graceful blooms in winter. It has colors ranging from white to pink to red. Some varieties bloom several times a year, and the plant thrives when root or pot bound, so choose a lovely container for it that will complement your holiday decor. Don’t overwater this or any succulent, and fertilize monthly from spring through early fall.

3. Rosemary

This fragrant, delicious herb is evergreen-like in appearance, and many people trim it into tiny tree shapes during the holidays. Rosemary is a perennial shrub that enjoys bright, southern light. Keep the soil evenly moist but don’t overwater. Rosemary essential oil is present in the needle-like leaves, and running your fingers over the herb will release a refreshing, uplifting scent. Trim off pieces to cook with holiday meats. Or, consider adding it with lemon zest to a soft, crumbly shortbread cookie recipe.

4. Paperwhites

These lovely, fragrant flowers will scent your home during the holidays if you time them right. Find them in planting kits in most garden centers; the bulbs must go within a planting medium and allowed to rest in a cold, dark room until they show shoots above the soil. Once they show growth, place them in a cool and sunny spot, and in four to six weeks, they will bloom. You may also buy paperwhites, called narcissus, already growing in the nursery or garden store, so don’t worry if you got a late start.
