If you’ve decided to end your marriage, it may be tempting to turn to your friends and digital followers for emotional support. However, posting online without considering the consequences could hurt your chances of securing a satisfactory outcome to your divorce proceedings. Here are several tips for handling social media while getting a divorce.

Do:

Scrutinize every post.

Could the status, photo, or video you’re about to post be misinterpreted in a way that would jeopardize your custody case or spousal support claim? It's wise to scrutinize everything you’re thinking about posting, because you can be sure your ex’s legal team will be monitoring your online activity. For instance, photos of you taken at a bar could be used to argue that you exercise poor judgment.

Remind friends of the pending divorce.

divorceEven if you’re not posting questionable content, your friends may be. Remind those who use social media that your divorce isn't finalized yet, and ask them to avoid tagging you or publishing content with your face in it.

Don’t:

Bash your ex.

Over the course of the proceedings, there may be times when you want nothing more than to vent about your ex. While this is a perfectly natural response, avoid doing so on social media. These posts could be used against you in court.

Delete your profiles.

It’s fine to deactivate your profiles if the divorce is pending, but don't delete them altogether. Depending on the circumstances of the divorce, this could be seen as destroying evidence, especially if your ex was the one who filed and isn't pursuing a no-fault divorce.
