When you think of a tree’s most vital needs, you might name water as one of the top contenders. However, while this element is essential to the health of your landscape, too much can flood the plants, preventing enough oxygen from getting through. To avoid root rot and other complications, use the following tree care tips this rainy season.

3 Tree Care Tips for the Rainy Season

1. Don’t Overwater

Before you head outside with the hose or watering can, note the recent weather patterns. If it’s been raining the past couple of days, your tree might not need any more water. For a quick test, dig a hole in your soil to about six inches deep. If the soil is wet, hold off on water and fertilizer for another day.

2. Staking

Unfortunately, for smaller trees with less established root systems, the wet soil may cause them to lose their balance, tilting to one side or the other because they can’t yet support the weight of their own canopies.

Ask your tree care team to install stakes around the tree, about two feet out from the trunk and two feet deep. Once tethered to the tree, these stakes will offer much-needed stability.

3. Pruning

Rain is often accompanied by strong winds. If your trees have any weak, hanging, or diseased branches, they could easily break off, creating a jagged tear or damaging a neighboring tree. That’s why you should have your trees pruned regularly. This will also allow for less wind resistance, so the canopy bends with the gusts instead of breaking.
