When you consider just how many times new parents must visit the pediatrician, it's easy to understand why they might overlook an additional trip to the dentist. During your little one’s first year alone, you can expect to schedule at least six doctor appointments for him or her. Since healthy baby teeth contribute to healthy adult teeth, it's important to practice good oral hygiene from day one. This includes wiping your baby's gums after each feeding, brushing the teeth once they start coming in, and scheduling regular dental exams and cleanings. If you’re a new parent, here’s what you need to know.

When to Schedule the First Dentist Appointment

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry advises parents to bring their children to a pediatric dentist when the first tooth erupts; however, they shouldn’t schedule the first visit any later than the baby's first birthday, even if no teeth have appeared yet. Assuming the child doesn't have any major dental issues, the parents will be instructed to schedule exams every six months moving forward. And at around age seven, the dentist might suggest scheduling an orthodontic evaluation.

What to Expect at the First Dentist Appointment

dentistDuring your child's first dental visit, the provider will examine their teeth, tongue, and gums and evaluate the jaw’s overall development. Depending on how many teeth have erupted, the dentist may also perform a gentle cleaning to remove any plaque, tartar, or staining. X-rays probably won’t be necessary unless extensive decay is evident.

Parents can benefit from this visit, as well. Use it to discuss your concerns regarding baby bottle tooth decay, teething, pacifier use, or thumb-sucking habits. Also, ask the dentist to show you how to brush and floss your child’s tiny teeth properly.
