After you’ve wrapped up the Thanksgiving feast and the holiday dinner parties, your dining room will have witnessed some of the most cherished memories of the season. As the new year approaches, declutter and reorganize the space to reflect your resolutions. To optimize your dining room set, take advantage of the following advice.

How to Organize Your Dining Room for the New Year

1. Dishes & Utensils

Many families have kitchen items that they rarely use except on special occasions. To house silver gravy boats, cake knives, and painted serving platters, you need a large piece of furniture with several separate compartments. If your dining room is a bit cramped, add a corner cabinet to the dining room set to save space. Alternatively, opt for a larger, decorative piece, such as a mahogany hutch.

2. Linens

Instead of keeping them piled up in the corner or mixed in with the bathroom linens, keep them neatly folded or rolled up in one of the drawers of your china cabinet or hutch. If any pieces are prone to wrinkling, drape them over a felt hanger and place them in the nearest closet.

3. Display Items

While you don’t want the room to feel cluttered, leave out some objects to make it seem welcoming and lived-in. For this purpose, select a few candlesticks, votives, or vases you’d like to leave out, perhaps alternating which sit at the center of the table. Then, consider adding a wine rack or bar cart to display wine glasses, champagne flutes, liquor bottles, and decanters. If you have fine china, display it behind glass in a dedicated china cabinet.
