Your furnace is essential for heating your home during the winter months. Although a home heating system is rarely silent, most homeowners are accustomed to normal sounds of operation—even the loud thump that’s heard when their HVAC systems turn on. However, the sudden occurrence of unusual noises can be somewhat alarming. The following noises likely indicate you need furnace repair.

3 Furnace Noises You Shouldn’t Ignore

1. Squealing

A high-pitched squealing or whining sound is a sure sign something is wrong with your furnace’s belts. Applying additional lubrication to the bearings or the belts themselves often solves the problem. Sometimes, the belts may have slipped and need readjustment. If your belts are significantly frayed, however, an HVAC contractor will need to replace them.

2. Chirping

3. Rattling

A loud rattling sound when a furnace turns on could be the fault of a wide range of furnace repair issues. It could indicate a worn fan or motor, a loose part, a problem with the heat exchanger, or improper ventilation. If the rattling sounds more like a click, you may have trouble with the flame sensor or gas ignition. Call a contractor right away to investigate if you suspect a problem with either of these furnace parts.
