The brakes are one of the most crucial safety components on any vehicle, ensuring a prompt stop whenever the pedal is pushed and preventing accidents. There are four main types of car brakes, and each one works a bit differently to help bring the vehicle to a stop. Below, these types are discussed in more detail.

A Guide to Car Brakes

1. Disc Brakes

Disc brakes have rotors, also known as discs, attached to each wheel. Tapping the brake pedal causes calipers to exert pressure on the brake pads that surround the discs, essentially squeezing the pads until they create enough friction for the discs to either slow down or stop the vehicle. Disc brakes tend to have dependable performance because they manage heat better than other types of brakes, resulting in greater stopping power.

2. Drum Brakes

Drum brakes have a small drum on each wheel. Depressing the brake pedal releases hydraulic pressure on a set of brake shoes, which press against the drum and create friction. This brings the vehicle to a stop. Drum brakes provide improved braking force and often last longer than other types of brakes.

3. Emergency Brakes

brakesEmergency brakes are an additional set of brakes not connected to the main disc or drum system. They typically work by engaging cables that hold the wheels in place. Sometimes called parking brakes, they are ideal for holding a vehicle secure when it is not in motion, particularly when parked on steep inclines.

4. Anti-Lock Brakes

Most modern vehicles are equipped with anti-lock brake systems. These systems prevent brakes from locking up when activated, which helps them maintain contact with the road and gives the driver greater control over the vehicle. They are especially beneficial on wet roads, where slippery conditions can result in higher chances of skidding and accidents.
