Winter may be one of the most picturesque seasons, but it also comes with an increased risk of costly home repairs caused by storms and freezing temperatures. This makes it essential to have a homeowner’s insurance policy that can meet any challenge winter throws at you. Even with insurance, homeowners also need to be proactive. Here are three tips every homeowner should follow to protect their homes this winter.

How to Limit Winter Insurance Claims

1. Prepare for Snow Damage

Before the forecast calls for snow is the best time to inspect your roof and siding. It’s a good idea to have someone look at your gutters as well. Blocked gutters will prevent melting snow from draining properly, which could form ice dams and cause leaks in ceilings and walls. If you can safely do so, use a roof rake to remove excess snow. Seal gaps in the attic to ensure that warm air stays trapped inside your home.

2. Protect Your Pipes

Frozen and burst pipes are common during the winter. According to the Insurance Information Institute, water damage and freezing constitute the second most frequent type of homeowner claim.

Before the freeze sets in, have a plumber inspect your pipes and insulate them. Shut off water valves to any outside spigots and cover them. The home should be kept heated to a minimum of 65 degrees and when the temperature plummets below zero, let water drip in taps overnight and keep sink cabinets open to let warm air circulate around the pipes. If your pipes freeze, call a professional to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. Never use an open flame to heat a frozen pipe.

3. Watch for Weak Limbs or Falling Trees

Snow and ice may look beautiful on trees, but the extra weight can cause them to break off and damage homes. Inspect the trees around your property for dead or weak branches, and trim or remove these limbs before the snow comes. If any of these trees are near power lines, your local utility company may be able to take care of this issue for you at no cost. Along with hail damage, wind damage is one of the most frequently cited causes for home damage, so removing limbs that are too close to your house will greatly reduce the risk of damage to your home.
