Although effective as a cancer treatment, chemotherapy is also accompanied by challenging side effects. Supporting a friend or family member during treatment has an impact on their well-being and may deepen the bond between you. Here’s a guide for knowing the right things to say and do.

How to Provide Support During Chemotherapy

1. Ask for Permission Before Showing Up

Some people appreciate visitors when going through chemo. Others may prefer to be left alone. Check in with your friend or relative before showing up to an appointment. Although they’ll appreciate your willingness to lend support, you should honor their wishes.

2. Strive for Normalcy

3. Find Something to Laugh About

Even if just for a moment, laughter reduces tension and takes a patient’s mind off their health status. Share funny stories or tell a joke to keep spirits up during treatment.

4. Offer Practical Help

Although beneficial in the long run, chemotherapy can be draining. As a result, your friend or relative may be unable to perform household chores, such as cleaning and shopping. Offer to help with chores to ease some of their burdens. Don’t wait to be asked. Some people have a hard time asking for help even when it’s sorely needed.
