Hardwood floors not only exude elegance and warmth but also last a lifetime. Although relatively easy to maintain, they do need proper care to remain beautiful and sturdy. The winter months can be tough on hardwood when snow- and ice-covered boots and shoes track mud and water indoors. Here are some tips to protect your floors throughout this season.

How Do Snow & Moisture Damage Hardwood?

Hardwood floors, even those sealed with varnish or other protective coatings, can absorb water from the snow and ice that melts from your family’s shoes and winter gear. Water can stain, discolor, and warp hardwood. You may have to replace boards that sustain extensive damage.

Dirt and de-icing agents mixed in with snow—like sand, rock salt, and calcium chloride—can also scratch the finish. When moisture seeps into these cuts, it’ll deform your floor. In addition, calcium chloride may leave a greasy film behind and make your floors look dull.

To preserve the condition of hardwood during winter, avoid tracking snow, ice, mud, and de-icing compounds inside. Place outdoor and indoor mats at entrances to clean debris from your footwear, and take off your shoes at the door. Place them on a nearby shoe rack or tray to dry. Coarse rugs outside every door will trap particles and absorb wetness.

Immediately wipe up any snow from floors before it dries. For a faster cleanup, store soft towels and a mop near entrances.
