Gutters are designed to divert rainwater away from a home’s roof and foundation. However, to be effective at this task, they have to be securely attached. If they are not, it will create serious issues that affect much more than your curb appeal. Poor drainage can compromise the structural integrity of your home and result in costly repairs. Here are some of the most common reasons sagging occurs.

What Causes Hanging Gutters?

1. Old Materials

Over time, the various materials used to make up your gutter system may begin to deteriorate. Typically, the fasteners are anchored to the fascia boards with nails. These can eventually rust and weaken with exposure to the elements. In turn, they’ll no longer be able to hold the gutters up. Additionally, gutters made from steel, aluminum, and vinyl frequently expand and contract with fluctuating temperatures. This can cause them to get bent out of shape.

2. Debris Buildup

guttersGutters collect leaves, twigs, dirt, and a variety of other kinds of debris. If all this is allowed to build up, it can clog the system and prevent rainwater from flowing freely through the downspout. The extra weight of the debris combined with backed up water will put pressure on the structure, which can lead to slumping. In some cases, the gutters may even detach from the roof. To avoid this, clean these channels three to four times a year.

3. Improper Installation

If they aren’t properly installed, gutters become more vulnerable to damage. This can include not installing the right size gutters, spacing the support hangars too far apart, failing to use long enough screws, or incorrectly aligning the gutters. If any of this occurs, rainwater will place excessive strain on the whole system and sagging can result.
