Although winter isn’t the normal growing season for most flowers, you can still find beautiful bouquets at a flower shop. However, the cold, dry weather makes it tricky to keep them blooming and vibrant. If you want to keep your home bright with fresh-cut flowers this winter, consider the tips below for prolonging their life.

4 Ways to Take Care of Fresh-Cut Flowers in Winter

1. Keep the Water Fresh

Check that the vase containing your flowers is always filled with clear room-temperature water, which is the easiest type of water for plants to absorb. If you notice that the water has become cloudy, then your flowers shouldn’t be drinking it. This dirty water could be contaminated with bacteria that could kill them faster.

2. Maintain Consistent Temperature

flowersSet the flowers in an area of your house where they won’t be near your heater, stove, or window, all of which may damage the flowers with heat. This will cause them to wilt quickly. However, you don’t want them to freeze, either. They might be safest in the middle of one of your rooms, where the temperature is likely steadiest and not too extreme.

3. Trim the Ends

Flowers begin dying from the bottoms of their stems. To help them continue absorbing nutrients from the water without being inhibited by dead ends, remove the flowers from the vase every one or two days and use a knife to cut the ends at an angle.

4. Feed Them

Some bouquets come with packets of flower food. Add that in the vase to give them more nutrients to distribute throughout their stems, leaves, and petals. The food often contains bactericide as well, which keeps the water clean longer than usual. In that case, even if you forget to change the water as often as you should, the flowers will still have some protection.
