Fur coats offer supreme beauty and warmth. They protect against the winter’s chill while making bold fashion statements. After tailoring and alterations, they fit elegantly to make even more luxurious garments. While furs like mink are durable, all of these garments require meticulous maintenance. Here, review a few care tips to keep your investment beautiful for years.

How to Protect Your Fur Coat

1. Use the Right Storage

Place your fur coat in a breathable garment bag when it’s not in use. To prevent humidity issues, avoid bags made of plastic, PEVA (polyethylene vinyl acetate), or vinyl.

Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources, both of which dry fur out and promote oxidation. Keep the coat in a cool storage space featuring plenty of ventilation. Cedar wardrobes and trunks absorb moisture and dry fur out, as do mothballs, so avoid using these.

2. Avoid Skin Contact

tailoringContact with skin oils can soil the fur prematurely. Exposure to sweat can also give the neckline an unpleasant odor.

To prevent these effects, create a barrier between your skin and the fur with either a turtleneck or scarf when you wear the coat.

3. Keep Cosmetics Off the Fur

Don't wear the jacket when applying perfume, hairspray, and other alcohol-based personal care products. Alcohol makes fur stiff and dries out the underlying leather.

If a product spills onto your coat, get it professionally cleaned immediately. If water gets on the fabric, allow it to air-dry in a well-ventilated space, such as the living room.
