Whether it’s coffee, tea, or wine, some beverages can create stains on your teeth that can be difficult to remove. Fortunately, there are ways to avoid them, such as regular dental care and drinking from a straw. Here’s what you need to know.

How to Prevent Stains on Your Teeth

1. Drink From a Straw

When you sip beverages like coffee, tea, or soda from a cup, they have a direct impact on the front of your mouth and can leave stains on your teeth over time. By using a straw when you sip darker beverages, you can prevent them from touching your front teeth, which are the most visible. You can still enjoy the drinks you love without worrying about them leaving undesirable stains.

2. Choose Foods Wisely

For instance, many fresh fruits and veggies can help clean your teeth due to all the crunching you're doing; just be sure they’re not too hard. Look for options that are lightly colored and not too acidic, such as celery.

3. Stay Hydrated

After eating foods like pasta and pizza or sipping beverages like wine—which you can’t exactly drink through a straw—you may feel like there is nothing you can do to lessen their impacts. However, by drinking water after the meal or happy hour, you can wash away some of the residues and prevent those stains from setting in fully. Excuse yourself to use the restroom, and rinse your mouth with water.

4. Use the Right Tools

It’s not only food or drinks that will stain your teeth over time; not using proper dental care tools like a good-quality toothbrush, a mouthwash with fluoride, and floss can cause plaque to build up over time. Talk to your dentist about which tools they recommend you use to fight and prevent plaque buildup. For example, they’ll often suggest using a soft-bristled toothbrush.
