While people often visit Hawaii for the gorgeous beaches, rich local heritage, and fascinating marine life, many come home dreaming about the desserts. With fresh flavors like coconut and pineapple available, it’s easy for Hawaii restaurants and bakeries to whip up unique sweet treats. If you’re not sure where to start, here are three desserts you shouldn’t miss while in Hawaii.

3 Popular Desserts in Hawaii Restaurants

1. Lilikoi Bars

Lilikoi bars are a variation of lemon bars made with passionfruit. These portable favorites contain layers of sweet dough toasted to a golden-brown crisp and topped with a glaze made of passionfruit puree, eggs, and sugar. Some chefs even add flaked coconut to the crust.

2. Chocolate Haupia Pie

restaurantIf you love the combination of coconut and chocolate, order a slice of chocolate haupia pie. Haupia is a custard made with coconut milk that’s layered on the pie’s chocolate filling. Chocolate haupia pie is typically made with a traditional pastry crust shell and topped with plenty of fresh whipped cream.

3. Chantilly

Hawaii’s chantilly is different from the fillings you may be used to eating on the mainland. On the islands, chantilly is made by beating egg whites, evaporated milk, sugar, salt, and butter together, creating a sweet and slightly savory filling that can be used as frosting or filling. Chantilly is commonly used in chiffon cakes, in which it’s spread over layers of airy chocolate cake layers.
