Botox® is best known as a cosmetic procedure to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also has applications within dental care, as it’s used to alleviate conditions that cause pain and stiffness in the jaw. Here is some information on how this treatment may be able to benefit you next time you visit your dentist.

What Is Botox®?

This cosmetic treatment works by paralyzing certain muscles and preventing the nerves from transmitting pain signals. The effects of the treatment typically last from three months to about a year. Side effects are usually minor and can include temporary swelling or bruising at the injection site.

How Is It Used at the Dentist’s Office?

There are a few different dental applications of Botox:

  • Reduction of High Lip Lines: Some patients visit the dentist for a solution to “gummy” smiles, also known as high lip lines. Botox can be applied to the lip muscles to lower the smile line and improve its overall look. This procedure is less invasive than crown lengthening, which pushes the gum to expose more of the tooth.
  • Treatment of TMJ Disorders: botoxTemporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders may develop from injuries or bone-related conditions, including arthritis. They cause stiffness in the jaw. Injecting Botox into the jawline relaxes the muscles and may reduce discomfort
  • Treatment of Bruxism: Bruxism is the clinical term for teeth grinding, which commonly happens overnight and causes enamel erosion and jaw pain. Botox has been shown to help reduce grinding, protecting the teeth.
  • Transition to New Dentures: Patients who wear dentures often experience changes to their lip muscles over time, resulting in difficulty eating. Botox may relax the facial and lip muscles so that dentures fit better.

Many dentists also offer Botox for cosmetic concerns, including the reduction of wrinkles or the smoothing of skin around the forehead.
