If you’re planning on putting your motor home in RV storage, the steps that you take now will be important for preserving its appearance and full functionality come spring. However, it can be difficult to know where to start. Consider the following to ensure that you’re on the right track.

How to Winterize Your RV

1. Inspect the Exterior

Any cracks or holes along the exterior of your RV might worsen in storage. Moisture increases the risk of rust and can cause premature deterioration to develop. Perform a walk-around of the vehicle and pinpoint areas that require attention, sealing up openings to prevent damage.

2. Turn Off the Power

Even though it won’t be plugged into any power source while in storage, it’s best to shut off the main breaker. Close the gas supply valve as well. Taking these extra precautions will maintain safety and avoid any unfortunate accidents.

3. Use Fuel Stabilizer

It’s common for the fuel to go bad after sitting idle for several months. Therefore, after incorporating a stabilizer, let the engine run for a few minutes to ensure that it works its way through the system. This will allow for better spring performance.

RVs tend to have a water reservoir for the showers, sinks, and other appliances that require a reliable source. Draining it prevents the pipes from freezing and reduces the need for future repair.

5. Clean the Refrigerator

Refrigerators are known to acquire an odd smell after being shut up for several months. Unplugging the appliance and thoroughly wiping down the interior could keep this from happening. Use a solution of warm water and a mild dish detergent to eliminate bacteria. Leave the door open so that the interior can dry.
