To make the most of a whale watching experience, you’ll need to pack accordingly for the trip. Here’s a list of essentials to help you prepare for the opportunity of a lifetime.

5 Essential Items for a Whale Watching Tour

1. Extra Layers

The temperature out on the open water is usually colder than on the shore. To keep yourself comfortable, dress light, but bring extra layers.

2. Sunscreen

Whale WatchingWhile engrossed in watching these incredible animals, you may forget to protect yourself from the sun’s UV rays. Even if it’s cloudy, rays will filter through, so protect your skin with a minimum SPF 30 sunscreen. Since sunscreen isn’t fully waterproof, if you get wet, re-apply the lotion.

3. Sunglasses

Besides the sunlight from above, the water’s surface will reflect it into your eyes. Wear UV-protective sunglasses to guard your eyes and maintain a clear view of the whales.

4. Snacks

Whale watching can take the better part of the day, so bring some snacks in case you get hungry. Double-check with the tour company if they offer food on-board or allow passengers to bring their own.

Treat yourself to snacks high in protein and fiber, such as nuts, jerky, or string cheese, as they will help you stay fuller for longer periods. Remember to bring a bottle of water as well to stay hydrated.
