Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection that can affect the skin of your feet, toenails, or hands. While the infection isn’t serious, it can be difficult to cure and is uncomfortable. It can also be dangerous for those with diabetes or a weakened immune system. If you suspect you may have athlete’s foot, see your podiatrist for treatment.

Causes

The tinea fungus that causes athlete’s foot is similar to fungi that also cause jock itch and ringworm. These fungi are typically passed from person to person and thrive in warm, moist environments such as showers, locker room floors, and near swimming pools. Some of the symptoms include itching, blisters, cracking and peeling skin, and discolored toenails. Visit your podiatrist if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.

You can reduce your risk of catching athlete’s foot by avoiding walking around barefoot, staying away from towels, shoes, and socks used by an infected person, and preventing your feet from staying wet for long periods of time. Your risk is also increased when your feet are sweaty, or you have a minor skin or nail injury on your foot.

Treatment

podiatristWhen you visit your podiatrist, they may diagnose your athlete’s foot based on the symptoms, or they may order a skin test to be sure that a fungal infection is the cause. While you can treat the infection with over-the-counter topical antifungal medications, your podiatrist may choose to prescribe prescription-strength topical or oral alternatives. If you’re experiencing painful inflammation or secondary bacterial infections, your doctor may also prescribe topical steroids or oral antibiotics.
