With Halloween on the way, Oahu Dental Care would like to remind everyone that, while candy is delicious, some varieties can do serious damage to your teeth if you eat too many of them. Oahu Dental Care strongly advises that you moderate your candy intake this Halloween, especially these five candies:

  • Candy Corn: It's a seasonal favorite, but it's also laden with sugar that damages your teeth in the long run, as the sugar interacts with the bacteria in your mouth.
  • Now & Later: With a high sugar content and a similar consistency to dental products that remove crowns, Now & Laters can wreck your teeth if you're not careful. They taste great, but save them for special occasions, and try not to pull on them if they get stuck in your teeth.
  • Gummy Bears: Much like taffy and caramels, these stick inside the grooves of your teeth and can be difficult to remove, resulting in long-term damage and lots of time in the dentist chair during your next check-up.
  • Sour Patch Kids: Along with the issues caused by chewy, sticky candies, sour candies are acidic, which intensifies the damage already caused by plaque. Over time, acidic, sugary candy wears away your tooth enamel, leading to cavities and other dental health issues.
  • Jolly Ranchers: Hard candy doesn't stick to your teeth, but it saturates your mouth with sugar as it dissolves, and hard candies can chip and damage your teeth if you're not careful while eating them.

If your Halloween candy gives you any serious problems that require a trip to the family dental practice, set up an appointment with Oahu Dental Care by visiting their website, or call       (808)456-5005/ 732-2821. The practice is also happy to provide cosmetic dentistry services, along with root canals, teeth whitening, tooth extraction, and more.
