3 Signs You Should Repair or Replace Your Water Heater

1. Leaking

A leaking water heater generally indicates that the tank could be cracked or corroded and requires a replacement. A leak from the side of the water heater may mean that the pressure and temperature relief valve is faulty.

water heaterThis safety feature will release water if the container is warmer than 200 degrees Fahrenheit or the internal pressure is above 25 pounds per square inch. Have a professional replace the valve and lower the temperature to prevent this issue from happening again. If the leak doesn’t stop, you may need to replace the tank as the valve isn’t to blame.

2. Sounds

Water heaters shouldn’t give off much noise. If the appliance starts banging or rumbling, there is likely hardened mineral buildup at the bottom of the tank. This layer can make the tank require more fuel to warm the water, lowering the energy efficiency.

Continuing to use the water heater may result in cracks or holes from where the sediment hardens and warms up repeatedly, wearing through the container and potentially releasing many gallons of water onto the floor unexpectedly.

3. Age

If your water heater is over 10-years-old, it may be nearing the end of it’s life expectancy. Most appliances last a decade before they require many repairs and are no longer worth fixing. At this time, consider replacing the setup with a new, more energy-efficient option.
