Downsizing is a smart move for seniors if they no longer need the extra space in their home, and want to simplify their lifestyle and cut costs. Moving into smaller apartments will involve getting rid of a lot of the belongings that they’ve accumulated over a lifetime. Help them do so with minimal stress by approaching the process in the following ways.

How to Downsize for an Apartment

1. Start With Duplicates

Seniors tend to need only one of each item since they most likely do not have kids living at home anymore and might not be entertaining as often. If they have more than one of anything, donate or throw away the extras. If they have something they use rarely, they could hand it off to a child or grandchild who they could borrow it from when in need. Duplicates tend to be particularly common in the kitchen, including china sets, silverware, and glasses.

2. Consider the New Space

apartmentsDownsizing means your senior has rooms in their current home that they won’t have in their new apartment. Start with those spaces, such as an office, spare bedroom, or a garage. You know that almost everything in those rooms will need to go, so sort through it to decide what can be relocated to another room, sold, donated, or thrown away. If the couch or table that they currently have is too large for the new apartment, call a removal service to rid of the furniture.

3. Decide What Matters Most

People often start by sorting what they don’t want, but you may find the process easier if you start with what they want to keep. Ask your loved one to create a list of the belongings they absolutely cannot part with. Pack up everything on that list that you can and put them aside. This protects those precious items while making sorting through everything else a little more manageable. After they decide what to keep, it will be easier to evaluate what they don’t need.
