A new carpet gives floors a fresh, clean start. Before a flooring contractor arrives, prepare your home to enable quick and smooth installation. Here’s how to get your home ready for new carpeting.

5 Steps to Take Before Carpet Installation

1. Complete Other Remodeling Projects

If you’re in the middle of any other home remodeling or renovation projects, wrap them up. Don’t ruin new floors with paint, plaster dust, or  wallpapering paste. Make carpet installation one of the last projects on your remodeling list.

2. Control the Temperature

Create the optimal environment for the installation team. The indoor temperature should be between 65° and 95°. Set your HVAC system to keep your home in this temperature range at least 48 to 72 hours before, during, and after installation. Also, ensure the crew has access to electricity, and warn them in advance of any hidden wiring.

3. Empty the Room

carpetA room should be completely empty. A clear space allows contractors to work freely. Remove all furniture, electronics, wall decorations, shoes, clothing, appliances, and personal possessions.

Secure any fragile valuables located near entrances and in hallways to prevent them from getting knocked over.

4. Give Them Space

Contractors need to move back and forth between their truck and your home without impediment to gather tools and materials. Give them a convenient and spacious location to park, and push any furniture blocking their path to the side.

5. Keep Kids & Pets Clear

Steer kids and pets clear of work areas. Consider keeping pets in a separate room and taking young children out for a few hours. If anyone in your home has allergies or respiratory conditions, find somewhere else they can stay during installation until cleanup is complete.
