Your student’s final year of high school is packed with memories. Capturing this special time in the perfect senior picture is priceless. If you’re wondering how to show them off in their best light when they reach the photography studio, the guide below offers advice.

How to Take Captivating Senior Pictures

Clothing

Busy clothes will only detract from your senior’s face, so avoid bright colors as well as loud patterns. Logos and other prominent symbols on clothing may also divert attention and eventually make the portraits look dated. Consider bringing a variety of clothing options to the session including jackets, hats, and other items you can layer so that you can determine what looks best in the moment.

Poses

photography studioYour teenager may feel a little uncomfortable with the process, so start simple. Begin with relaxed sitting poses. Rather than having them sit on a chair, opt for a stool, steps, a window ledge, or other unusual perches. Then encourage them to stand while taking photos from various angles. Ask your student to show off various-sized smiles as well as some mature, serious looks.

One extremely effective pose is having your teen lean toward the camera and laugh. It conveys energy and joy. Make sure all shots are 1/2 or 3/4-body views. Full body shots can lose detail and emotion.

Lighting

Lighting should always be airy, open, and bright. Natural lighting is ideal. When shooting indoors, use a space with large windows or suitable artificial light. Make sure to account for shadows and glare when shooting to avoid bringing unwanted harshness to otherwise beautiful images.

Accessories

Feel free to bring props that highlight your student’s interests and accomplishments. From a traditional cap and gown to sports paraphernalia or musical gear, personal touches define a particular moment in time for family, friends, and generations to come.
