From running a 3:43 mile to pitching a perfect baseball game, the human body is capable of amazing feats. It’s far from bulletproof, though, and even the strongest individuals are vulnerable to injury when they push themselves to the limit. Whether you’re a professional athlete or you play in a dodgeball league on the weekends, it’s wise to be familiar with the most common sports injuries. When you know how to prevent them, you’ll spend less time at physical therapy and more time playing.

3 Most Frequent Sports Injuries

1. Shin Splints

Characterized by pain that runs up and down the tibia, shin splints are one of the most common overuse injuries, especially among those who participate in high-impact activities like running. Also known as tibial stress syndrome, shin splints occur when the shinbone and surrounding tissue can’t withstand the demands they're under.

To prevent this repetitive stress injury, follow a reasonable training plan and wear shoes that provide adequate support when exercising. If you’re a runner, you should also consider cross-training one or two days a week.

2. Sprained Ankles

physical therapyLigaments are responsible for stabilizing joints. Although these bands of tissue are relatively tough, they can stretch or even tear if placed under excessive stress. Known as sprains, damaged ligaments are especially common in the ankles. If you twist, turn, or roll your ankle in the wrong way, a sprain is inevitable.

To prevent such injuries, warm up adequately before exercising and focus on maintaining your flexibility and muscle strength. It's also wise to use caution when walking on uneven surfaces and to wear support braces or tape if your ankles have been compromised from prior injuries.

3. Dislocated Shoulders

If the shoulder bone pops out of its socket, it’s known as a dislocation. While doctors can usually slip the bone back in without issue, the shoulder will be more vulnerable to repeat injuries in the future and may eventually become unstable.

Athletes who play contact sports are especially susceptible to dislocated shoulders. While there’s no way to prevent forceful blows when playing football or hockey, you can protect yourself by wearing adequate safety gear and exercising regularly so as to maintain joint flexibility and muscle strength.
