At preschool, children take their first steps toward independence. Although it’s a wonderful milestone, many kids find the transition stressful and experience separation anxiety. If you can’t drop your little one off at preschool without triggering tears and protest, here are four tips for easing your child’s anxiety.

How to Simplify Preschool Drop-Offs

1. Visit the School Beforehand

Before the first day of preschool, bring your child to the classroom so they can get accustomed to the environment and teachers. Since you’ll be right by your little one’s side, they’ll be more eager to explore, which can increase their confidence at the first drop-off.

2. Wake Up Earlier

preschoolChildren who go to bed and wake up early will have more time in the morning to eat a nutritious, energy-boosting breakfast and prepare for the school day, which eases crankiness and anxiety. You can also arrive at the school sooner, letting your little one settle in before other children enter the classroom.

3. Provide a Security Object

Ask the teacher if you can give your child a security object. Whether it’s a favorite blanket, a hat that smells like you, or a photo of the two of you, your child can turn to the object for comfort throughout the day.

4. Say Goodbye With Confidence

When saying goodbye to your child, try to remain confident. If your little one senses your anxiety or sadness, their own worries may increase. Share a quick hug, stand up straight, smile, and don’t look back after you’ve started walking away. Also, don’t sneak out when your child isn’t looking, as this can strengthen your little one’s stress.
