The winter weather can be harsh on your hair. Exposure to wind and the cold, dry air outside can suck the moisture out of your locks. That’s why regular trips to the hair salon are important during this season. If you have problems with dry hair, below are a few steps you can take to keep your mane healthy and hydrated.

Do:

Get the ends trimmed regularly.

When the ends of your hair are dry and brittle, the strands can split. The split can move up the shaft, compromising new growth and leading to breakage. To prevent this, get trims around three to four times a year.

Try argan oil.

New-York-New-York-hair-salonSebum is your hair’s natural moisturizer. Secreted from the scalp, the oil travels down the hair shaft to keep your locks hydrated. Your body might not produce enough of this to combat dryness, or your wave pattern could prevent the oils from getting from the scalp to the ends.

To make up for the lack of natural moisture, work Moroccan argan oil into the tips. Its fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamin E will keep your hair hydrated and shiny

Don’t:

Shampoo daily.

Get out of the habit of washing your hair daily. While this may get rid of grime, it also takes away the natural oils of the scalp. Limit shampooing to three times a week.

When you do wash your hair, use a moisturizing conditioner to replenish the oil lost. Try to use only lukewarm water, since hot water causes further dryness.

Use heated styling tools.

From flat irons to curling wands, various heated styling tools can temporarily change the texture of your locks. Use these devices on special occasions, as daily use can dry the hair out.

When you use them, make sure to check their temperature settings. To avoid damage, use the tools at the lowest temperature settings. You could also look for nonheated solutions, such as smoothing creams.
