Wooden countertops give kitchens a warm look and a natural visual aesthetic. Knowing how to care for this material properly ensures that the slab retains its beauty and quality for decades. Below are three tips for keeping your wood countertop in prime shape.

3 Tips for Maintaining Wooden Countertops

1. Eliminate Excessive Moisture

Letting spills sit may be the quickest way to ruin wooden countertops. Moisture, be it from wet glasses, hot pans, or pots, can seep into the wood pores and leave white marks. To avoid unsightly water stains, wipe off any spills as soon as possible. Also, make it a habit to use potholders or trivets whenever you need to put something hot on the worktop.

2. Oil the Surface

Applying oil to wood sealscountertops the surface and helps protect it from damage. Doing so also gives it a natural patina, making the worktop look cleaner and refreshed. Once or twice a year, apply a decent amount of Danish, tung, or linseed oil on the wood surface. Let it sit for half an hour before wiping off the excess with a clean cloth.

3. Use Stain Removers

You should avoid handling dark liquids, such as wine or coffee, on the surface. If spills do occur and still seep into the wood despite your preventive measures, act quickly to remove the stain. You can use commercial stain removers specifically made for wood. Alternatively, you can scrub the stain away with sandpaper, then oil the surface to reseal and protect it.
