Most Hawaii tours stop at the beach for the stunning views and water activities. It’s also home to intriguing wildlife, and you should do your part to respect and protect it. Learn more about the wildlife you’re likely to see on the beach and how you can be mindful of them during your visit.

What Animals Will You See There?

Several members of Hawaii’s wildlife can be found at the beach. The endangered nēnē, or Hawaiian goose, is the state’s bird and may be found along the edges of beaches, nibbling on vegetation.

Hawaii toursHawaiian green sea turtles can often be seen sunning on beaches. This endangered, native species is under federal and state protection.

If you’re lucky, you may also see monk seals. Among the most endangered marine animals in the world, they’re also protected under federal and state laws. They can sometimes be found lounging in the sand near the water.

What Should You Do?

If you come across any of these animals while on a Hawaii tour, don’t approach them. Getting close to or interacting in any way with these animals can disrupt their behavior and force them away from food or toward danger. They may also react aggressively; for example, if a mother seal protects her pups.

Also, never feed the wildlife. Not only can the ingredients be harmful, but the creature may also learn to approach humans for food, which puts them in danger. Be quiet, don’t shine lights at the animal, and give it a wide radius.

Always pick up any trash you see on the beach, as wildlife can ingest or get tangled in it, and don’t leave food or liquids laying around.

If you notice injured or harassed wildlife while on a Maui private tour, report it to the proper authorities immediately.
