Many sewing enthusiasts look forward to the holidays. It allows them to improve their skills by taking on a few festive projects. If you plan to get out the sewing machine this winter, below are a few items you can give as gifts and use around the house.

3 Sewing Projects to Get Into the Holiday Spirit

1. Pajamas

With time off from work and school, many families like to lounge around the house during the holidays. To help friends and relatives feel cozier while relaxing, give them pajama sets in holiday patterns. For an idea of how much fabric you’ll need, ask the intended recipient to borrow a pair of their pants for the measurements. You can also look for a pattern in a sewing store. This way, you’ll have general size measurements and step-by-step instructions on how to complete the project.

2. Throw Pillows

sewingYour home might be bustling with activity as friends and relatives come over. To create a festive atmosphere, make a few adjustments to the current decor. Temporarily replace throw pillows on chairs and sofas with your unique creations. Choose deep green, red, gold, or silver fabric for the pillows or material with patterns of snowmen, reindeer, and other holiday characters. Cut two large squares in the fabric and sew three sides together to create a pocket. Fill it with stuffing before sewing the fourth side.

3. Potholders

If you plan to cook a lot over the holidays, create an extra set of potholders. This way, you won’t have to hunt for pairs that get lost on cluttered kitchen counters. Having an extra set will also come in handy if family and friends help with cooking duties. The project requires sewing together medium-sized squares and filling them in with the fabric. Use a piece of thicker, rough cotton fabric for the project, as it will keep the heat off hands and provide a better grip.
