If you are early in addiction recovery, it can be challenging to navigate the holiday season. With celebration comes the opportunity to drink and socialize with friends, colleagues, and loved ones. To maintain sobriety and stay on the path to recovery, use the following strategies while navigating the winter season.

3 Tips for Staying Sober Through the Holidays

1. Avoid Temptation

You may not be able to skip every holiday party, but make sure to RSVP “no” to those that will be the most tempting. Avoid events where the primary focus will be alcohol, as well as any parties that will be hosted at any bars or restaurants that you frequented before entering recovery.

2. Practice Saying No

However, at social gatherings with colleagues or former friends, be prepared to say no. If you don’t want to discuss your situation with coworkers, think of a polite way to decline drinks in advance, such as saying you are driving home after the event. However, recovery isn’t something to hide, so don’t be afraid to be honest and open if you feel comfortable enough to do so.

3. Have a “Sober” Partner

If partygoers are allowed to bring guests, invite a sober partner. Make sure to choose someone who will happily decline drinks as well. Whether he or she is in recovery, too, or being supportive, the party will be more fun if you’re not the only one who’s abstaining from alcohol for the evening.
