The holiday season is in full swing, which means many homeowners are getting ready to celebrate. This time brings a variety of festivities that include pretty decorations and delicious foods. Unfortunately, some of these pose risks to cats and dogs. Avoid emergency trips to the veterinarian this season by keeping your pet far away from the following items.

Your Guide to Protecting Your Pet During the Holidays

1. Decorations

Shiny materials and stringed objects, including tinsel and beads, are attractive to curious cats, but if swallowed, can cause intestinal damage. Use artificial flowers or burlap ribbon instead.

Candles and string lights can burn pets and pose fire hazards. Keep lit candles out of reach at all times, and protect cords with cord covers or tape.

2. Plants

Many household plants are poisonous to pets, so it’s crucial to do some research before bringing any home. Amaryllis, mistletoe, holly, and lilies are common holiday plants that could result in trips to the animal clinic if your pet ingests them.

To stay safe, pick up artificial plants or choose pet-friendly options like Christmas cactus, autumn olive, roses, and moth orchids.

3. Food

veterinarianFood is a common reason for emergency trips to the veterinarian. Certain seasonal fare, such as chocolate, caffeine, macadamia nuts, fatty meat scraps, grapes and raisins, onions, and yeast dough are particularly dangerous to pets.

To prevent stomach trouble in your furry friend, only feed them pet treats.

4. Tree Water

If you prefer live Christmas trees, you might use additives to extend their lifespan. Unfortunately, thirsty pets may mistake the tree stand for a bowl and drink the water with the toxic product.

To prevent this, do not add fertilizers, sugar, aspirin, or any other additives to your tree’s water.

5. Alcohol

If you’re hosting holiday parties, clean any alcohol spills immediately and pick up unattended cups. In pets, alcohol can cause weakness, vomiting, loss of coordination, and in serious cases, seizures and respiratory failure.

Make sure your guests know not to feed your pet their holiday cocktails and always have fresh water out for your animal to satiate their thirst.
