Dementia is a term used to describe symptoms that impair communication, thought, and memory. Although anyone can get dementia, it’s more common among the elderly. Because a person’s mental health can cause problems with daily life, you’ll want to start treating a loved one with dementia care as early as possible. Take a look at the most common symptoms below, and if you notice more than one, schedule an appointment with a doctor.

What Are the Most Common Signs of Dementia?

1. Trouble Retaining New Information

Short-term memory tends to be the first sign you’ll notice. While it’s common for seniors to forget names and some memories from the past, they should still be able to learn new information. Perhaps the name of a new acquaintance they’ve met several times is forgotten, or they’ve frequently missed scheduled appointments.

2. Repetition

They may conduct necessary daily tasks more than once in a day or ask the same question twice within a single conversation, even when the question was answered the first time. Be patient with them, and avoid telling them you went over this information already, as they may become agitated that they can’t remember.

3. Personality Changes

As the person’s brain cells continue to deteriorate, and they can’t always recall who they are, you may notice drastic personality changes. A shy person may suddenly become a social butterfly as their judgment is impaired.

They may become more irritable if they are confused, and depression is common because they have more and more memory loss. Take note if they are not bathing or grooming or if they are alienating themselves from loved ones.

4. Difficulty With Familiar Tasks

Your loved one may forget how to conduct tasks they’ve completed many times, such as getting lost on the way to the grocery store they’ve gone to hundreds of times. You may notice this change first with difficult tasks, such as how to pay bills online, but then it may begin to happen with simpler ones like how to work the vacuum.
