Boxing is an exciting sport that takes a significant amount of skill and constant training. For many beginners, the most challenging part of starting is learning how to take a hit. The guide below covers how to get over your fears and box confidently.

A Guide to Overcoming Your Fears When Boxing

1. Wear the Right Gear

Protective gear ensures your safety and helps you feel more secure. Boxing gloves will protect you and your opponent from harsh impacts, and a properly sized mouthguard will shield your teeth. Shin guards and headgear are also highly recommended. To cover sensitive areas, consider getting a chest guard or cup as well.

2. Spar With a Good Partner

The best way to practice is by sparring with an experienced partner with whom you feel comfortable. Don’t choose a novice with no technique or a brawler who only wants to beat down on you. A veteran will tone down the intensity and focus on helping you improve. Over time, productive practice will help you get accustomed to taking punches.

3. Start With Slow Sparringboxing

Many beginners have trouble detecting punches as they’re coming, which adds to the fear of unexpected pain. Slow sparring draws out the motions and allows you to see what you normally wouldn’t. It’s highly beneficial for novices to detect the subtle movements and visual cues that indicate their opponent’s next move, allowing them to better defend themselves.

4. Run Blocking Drills

No boxer can evade every punch, no matter how skilled they are. However, improving your blocks will redirect the force of the blow. Blocking drills teach you how to properly absorb shock, get used to gradually harder punches, relax, and defend more practically.

5. Develop Your Confidence

When it comes to boxing, having confidence in your skills will assuage your fears over time. Gaining experience and improving your techniques lends you faster reflexes, better adaptability, and higher endurance in the ring. With continuous training, you’ll soon have the confidence necessary to box fearlessly.
