Tires are one of the most noticeable parts of any vehicle. Though they come in many makes and styles, some are more prominent than others. If you’ve ever been to a vintage auto show or you’re a fan of cars from previous decades, chances are you’ve seen a whitewall tire. Here’s a closer look at the history of this bygone feature.

What Is a Whitewall Tire?

Whitewall tires, as the name suggests, are tires that are partially or entirely white on the visible outer portion. Some variants have a simple white stripe around them, while on others, the entire sidewall is colored white. This tire style is commonly associated with older vehicles, especially those made before 1970.

They got this color thanks to the use of zinc oxide in their construction, which is pure white. While this additive was first introduced in 1914 by the Vogue Tyre and Rubber Co. in Chicago to help reduce wear, it also resulted in the distinct color scheme that has since become a sensation for vintage auto show events and classic car collectors.

Why Are These Tires Still Popular?

vintage auto showGiven that they were originally in production so long ago, it’s rare to find a vehicle made today that has whitewalls as a stock feature. However, since many people like to modify their vehicles, often using older parts to do so, it isn’t uncommon for the whitewall to be an option.

This is especially true for anyone who likes retro features in their vehicles, such as a person who restores classics. Restomod cars are a relatively new phenomenon in which people try to recreate the look of older cars while outfitting them with modern amenities. Whitewall tires can be a perfect fit in these setups. Anyone who plans to take their antique vehicle to a vintage auto show will likely want whitewalls to complete the look.
