Pregnancy is both an exciting and anxious time. Expectant mothers are expected to visit the doctor’s office regularly to assess their health and the baby’s. Surprisingly to some, general dentistry should also be considered a high priority during this time, since your body will be undergoing changes that can impact oral health in many ways.

How Pregnancy Impacts Oral Health

1. Hormonal Changes

Pregnant women experience many hormonal changes that can lead to an increased risk of gum disease. Gingivitis is a mild form of the disease but, if left untreated, it can develop into a much more serious type called periodontitis.

Periodontitis can lead to tooth loss. Increases in hormones, such as progesterone and estrogen, can cause gum tissue and surrounding bone to loosen, which makes teeth loose as well. This is why it is so important that pregnant women not skip their general dentistry appointments even as their other medical appointments increase. Symptoms of gum disease include red or swollen, tender, or bleeding gums and bad breath.

2. Dietary Changes

Women experience changes in their diets while pregnant that can include an increase in sugar consumption. Brushing and flossing are especially important during this time to cut down on the bacteria that cause tooth decay. This cavity-causing bacteria can be passed onto the baby, which can lead to health complications.

3. Morning Sickness

Pregnant women’s teeth tend to be exposed to more acid as a result of gastric reflux. This can eat into dental enamel. Contrary to what most might expect, you should not brush your teeth immediately after vomiting. Instead, rinse out your mouth with water until an hour has passed. While your enamel is soft, the harsh scrub of bristles may cause it to weaken further.
