Whether you were recently in a vehicular collision or require auto body repairs for any reason, you’ll receive an estimate before moving forward with the work. Knowing the language used will eliminate confusion and help you ask the right questions. Below are a few of the most used terms found on auto estimates.

5 Auto Body Repair Terms Frequently Seen On Estimates

1. R/I

Auto body repair estimates often feature abbreviations. The term "R/I" stands for "remove and install." Technicians reference this term when they remove undamaged parts from vehicles to finish a repair or paint job. The components get reinstalled when the repairs are complete.

2. Aftermarket Parts

Also known as non-OEM, copy, or imitation parts, aftermarket parts are replacement parts not made by the original equipment manufacturer. While these parts typically feature low prices, they may not offer the structural support, color matching, finish, or overall quality that the original parts provide.

3. Betterment

auto body repairIf you are in an accident, components that already have wear such as batteries, tires, brake pads, and shock absorbers may sustain damage. If your auto estimate includes replacing worn parts damaged from a collision, you’ll see the term “betterment.” Your insurance carrier will cover a portion of betterment costs to restore parts to pre-accident condition.

4. BLND

An auto estimate abbreviation for “blend,” BLND stands for combining toners to create a new finish that matches the panel color. You may see other panel-related terms depending on the degree of paint damage, such as a clear coat that protects the basecoat layer.

5. LKQ

Like-Kind and Quality parts, or LKQ, concern those removed from another vehicle made the same year as yours. Some LKQ parts come from newer cars, as well. These pieces generally surpass aftermarket parts in terms of quality, but you should not install them without thorough examinations to ensure vehicle compatibility.
