How to Distinguish Between Panic & Anxiety Attacks

Panic Attacks

Unlike anxiety attacks, panic attacks often come out of nowhere. They are often not associated with any type of trigger. These events usually last about ten minutes, and some people may experience several in a row. 

Some common symptoms of a panic attack include a racing heart rate, chest pain, hot flashes, chills, dizziness, shaking, shortness of breath, feelings of being choked, stomach pain, and sweating. Symptoms that are usually unique to panic attacks include feelings of detachment, a sudden fear of dying, and feelings of loss of control. 

Anxiety Attacks

anxietyMany of the symptoms of anxiety attacks are similar to those of panic attacks. However, these attacks are generally associated with a trigger or periods of worry. Some of these triggers may include social stress, work stress, trauma, phobias, chronic conditions, caffeine, or stressful situations like driving.

These events are often less intense than panic attacks but may last longer. You might feel an attack build gradually since they are usually less sudden then panic attacks. If you have these attacks regularly, talk to your therapist about identifying triggers.
