It’s common knowledge that motor oil needs to be changed every 3,000 to 6,000 miles, depending on your vehicle. However, a number of other factors will play a role in determining how often you need an oil change. Learn about some of the most common below to ensure you take proper care of your vehicle.

4 Factors That Affect Motor Oil Life Span

1. Heat

Consistently high temperatures can start to thin out your motor oil. The thinned oil may not properly lubricate the engine and cause damage. Have your oil changed more frequently if you live in a hot climate.

In a similar vein, if you haul a trailer or drive with heavy loads, your engine will run hotter and thin out its oil.

2. Dirt Roads

Oil ChangeIf you drive on dirt or gravel roads, you’ll need to have an oil change more often than those who drive exclusively on paved roads. As you drive, dirt and debris can get into the oil, making it gritty and less effective, especially if you have a cheap filter.

3. Mileage

A high-mileage vehicle tends to use oil at a faster rate than a low-mileage one. If your vehicle has more than 75,000 miles on it, you may need more frequent oil changes.

4. Traffic

Only driving short distances and frequent stops and starts don’t let the engine run at its optimal temperature, which can lead to more deposit buildup. More frequent oil changes are necessary to clean out the system.
