Whether you’re traveling to visit family for a festive celebration or taking a holiday trip to relax, maintain excellent dental care habits during the vacation. Unfortunately, it can be challenging to prioritize your oral health between busy schedules and seasonal indulgences. Here are a few easy tips you can follow to protect your teeth during this festive time.

3 Dental Care Tips for Holiday Travelers

1. Protect Your Toothbrush

At home, your toothbrush likely has regular exposure to air, which naturally dries the head and kills bacteria. However, many people enclose their brushes in plastic travel cases, which inhibit ventilation. This will protect residual bacteria, and you may reintroduce them to your mouth the next time you brush. Your travel case should have ventilation holes that are large enough to accommodate healthy air circulation. Once you arrive at your destination, place the toothbrush beside the sink in the open air.

2. Maintain Regular Brushing

If you accidentally packed your toothbrush in a checked bag and need to freshen up on the plane, use water to thoroughly rinse away food particles and bacteria. If you’re staying at a hotel and forgot your toothbrush or floss at home, ask the housekeeping staff for an extra set.

3. Chew Sugarless Gum

Sugar-free gum gives your breath a minty scent, and it also prevents tooth decay, making it ideal for situations when you can't get to a sink to brush. Always opt for a sugarless gum that has the American Dental Association’s seal of approval. Additionally, chewing gum on a flight can relieve pressure in the ears, resulting in a more comfortable takeoff and landing.
