Siding protects your home from the elements and pests. With proper care, vinyl cladding should last at least 20 years or longer with newer brands. Follow these tips for caring for vinyl siding.

How to Maintain Vinyl Siding

1. Keep It Clean

sidingModern vinyl is popular because it’s easy to clean. When it’s warm and sunny, use a soft cloth, a nylon bristle brush, and water from your hose. This task is best performed in the spring, summer, or autumn. Check it periodically during the winter for mold and moisture issues. Start at the bottom of the wall and move up, rinsing completely before the soap dries. Do not use harsh cleaners or abrasives, as they can scratch or discolor the surface. Avoid bleach, steel wool or steel brushes, and organic solvents.

2. Don’t Paint

You won’t be able to get even coverage of paint because the siding will expand and contract with weather and temperature differences. Paint on vinyl is likely to crack or split, and dark paint over light-colored siding can result in buckling or warping due to an increase in heat absorption.

Painting may also void the manufacturer’s warranty. However, vinyl cladding is designed to maintain its color and texture for decades, so talk to a professional installer to choose a color you like from the beginning.

3. Keep Heat Sources Away

PVC ignites only at very high temperatures, but it can be discolored or warped by repeated exposure to heat. Keep outdoor heaters, barbecues, and fire braziers at least 10 feet away from the side of the house.

4. Power Wash Carefully

You can use a power washer to clean the exterior if done carefully. You must hold the sprayer at eye level to avoid getting water behind the planks. Avoid pressure washing around windows, doors, electrical outlets, and vents, as the potential for water to get inside and cause damage is higher in these areas.

Be sure to check the manufacturer recommendations regarding pressure washing before you start. If moisture gets behind the siding, you may end up with mold, mildew, and general water damage as a result.
