When contemplating the purchase of a new car, there are many factors to consider. Do you want an automatic or manual transmission? Are you more interested in size or speed? One of the most hotly debated topics is whether or not foreign or domestic cars are better. The choice you make can determine everything from how much you pay at the pump to which mechanics you see. The guide below looks at some of the differences between U.S. and foreign-made cars.

Performance

Foreign cars tend to have high satisfaction ratings among customers. Near the top of that list is Toyota®’s Lexus, which scored 84 out of 100 according to reports. Other top brands include Volvo®, Subaru®, and Audi®, with an average satisfaction score of 83. Only two American car brands currently score above 82 (the minimum determined for a high rating)—Lincoln® and Cadillac®.

A recent study determined that the longest-lasting vehicles are SUVs, with the Toyota Sequoia leading the charge. Five of the vehicles in this survey were American made, but the vast majority of the longest-lasting vehicles are foreign. Japanese manufacturers like Toyota and Honda® are the safest as well.

Maintenance

mechanicIn most circumstances, domestic cars are less expensive upfront, but more expensive to maintain. However, there are exceptions like the BMW® or other European luxury brands, which are generally costlier both to purchase and repair. A mechanic may have to order in a part from overseas, increasing costs.

Seeking the Right Mechanic

If you do decide on a foreign car, it is best to seek a mechanic who specializes in non-U.S.-made vehicles and, if possible, your car brand in particular. Not only will they be more experienced at dealing with your likely problem, but they will have established relationships with foreign car parts suppliers.
